The Greensboro History Museum, an AAM-accredited Smithsonian Affiliate, is seeking a Curator of Collections Management and Textiles. The museum is a division of the City of Greensboro Library Department and operates as a public-private partnership with the nonprofit GHM Incorporated. In partnership with the community, the Greensboro History Museum collects the city's diverse history and connects people to that history and one another through engaging exhibits, educational programs and community dialogue. Located in Downtown Greensboro's Cultural District, the museum is open Tuesdays–Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays 2-5 pm. Admission is free. Learn more at www.greensborohistory.org.

The Curator of Collections Management evaluates, enriches and preserves the museum’s history collections. This position is responsible for developing and implementing collection policies and procedures through stewardship of the physical collection and management of the legal paperwork and individual object records. The person in this position also curates the costume and textile collection, responsible for the acquisition, research and care of the collection, and serving on museum collections and exhibit teams. This position has registrar responsibilities and supports the museum’s mission through the acquisition of objects, collection development and the library mission to provide access to information and collections to our community. They manage collections through registration, documentation, care and storage, and identify and acquire artifacts that further the mission of the Greensboro History Museum, especially those that fill significant gaps or represent people or events from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This position works closely with other curators, archivists, educators, preparators, conservators, photographers, volunteers, museum donors and patrons on a variety of projects and collections. Must have demonstrated experience in collections management principles, procedures, policies and best practices for object care, record keeping, technology and conservation within a historical museum or cultural setting using a collection management system and database; such as Rediscovery’s Proficio or similar.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree with 4 or more years’ collections management or registration experience at a museum or cultural institution
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office software programs and imaging programs
  • 2+ years of experience in exhibit logistics and standards

An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master’s Degree in Art History, Fashion, Museum Studies, History, Anthropology or related field
  • 1+ years’ experience with textile collections
  • 2+ years’ experience as registrar/collections manager at an AAM accredited Museum
  • 2+ years’ experience with shipping, packing methods, exhibition budgets, and fine arts insurance
  • 2+ years’ experience using cameras and basic construction tools for storage box fabrication
