Description
The Museum Preparator is responsible for the installation and maintenance of exhibit space in the Wyoming State Museum, the coordination of specific exhibit-related projects, and other activities to further the museum's mission.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Operation of woodworking, metalworking, and painting equipment.
Construction and finishing of museum displays and exhibits.
Construction of props and furniture for education programs.
Painting and touch-up of gallery walls and general maintenance of the museum exhibits.
Build fine cabinets, vitrines, and other exhibit furniture.
Work with museum's cultural and natural history artifacts.
Prepare custom mounts for display and storage of artifacts.
Prepare, hang, and install art objects and artifacts for exhibits.
Maintenance of shops and exhibits.
Ensure equipment is up-to-date and running, and ensure spaces are clean and safe.
Maintain proper inventory of exhibit tools and supplies, order supplies and equipment as needed.
Repair and replace interactive components and exhibit furniture.
Perform additional duties within the State Museum and the Department of State Parks & Cultural Resources when needed.
Works with and follows exhibit development in coordination with Curator of Exhibits and other WSM staff.
Requirements
Preference may be given to applicants with three or more years of experience in museum studies, art, design, or another related field.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of working without direct supervision, exercising considerable initiative, independent analytical and evaluative judgment.
Knowledge of how to achieve program goals while fully complying with all State and Federal regulations.
Knowledge of arts, cultural or historic policy, and procedural issues.
Knowledge of community and economic development policies and procedures.
Knowledge of Wyoming and Western history and art.
Knowledge of museum philosophy, professional best practices, and ethics.
Knowledge and abilities in a wide range of fabrication techniques.
Knowledge and experience with fabrication in metal, wood, and plastic.
Knowledge of how to handle sensitive artifacts and prepare them for the exhibit.
Knowledge of exhibit design and construction techniques.
Experience with Adobe, Sketchup, CAD, and other design software.
Knowledge of lighting systems and conservation requirements.
Estimating and bidding practices.
Ability to translate interpretive ideas into visual form.
Knowledge of ADA Accessibility and design standards.
Experience with welding steel and brazing/soldering brass.
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to lift 75lbs
