Description
The Director of Individual Giving works closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees and leads our Individual Giving team to identify, cultivate, and steward net-worth individuals. The ideal candidate is a creative, accomplished advancement professional with the capacity to inspire and motivate staff, administrative and artistic leadership, volunteers, donors, and prospects, as the Brooklyn Museum prepares for our bicentennial in 2025.

- Eight or more years of progressively responsible public-facing fundraising experience
- Demonstrated ability to implement a comprehensive fundraising program for principal and major gifts
- Track record of soliciting six- and seven-figure gifts
- Deep experience within the New York City philanthropic community
- Expertise in financial tracking and goal-setting, and ability to execute on best practices in all aspects of development and fundraising
- Proven record of mentoring exceptional staff and collaborating across departments in a large institution
- Extensive experience managing donor relations, stewardship, and/or communication programs in a complex nonprofit environment
- Ability to evaluate program effectiveness and to implement changes
- Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills
- Superior interpersonal skills, an engaging manner, and the ability to make connections and to nurture strong and enduring relationships
- Strong management skills and ability to work collaboratively with Museum colleagues, as well as cultural sensitivity and a strong respect for differences
- Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge and related technologies for managing and tracking goals, accountability, and stewardship
- Knowledge of and commitment to the Brooklyn Museum’s mission, history, and programs, and a strong affinity with Brooklyn
- A self-starter with a sense of urgency and humor
Responsibilities:
- Establish annual fundraising goals, work to meet them through active public-facing fundraising, and track the team’s progress
- Manage and motivate the four Individual Giving team members, facilitate their professional development, and hold them accountable for achieving their goals
- Oversee a robust system of prospecting and moves management of high-net worth individuals
- Monitor progress through Raiser’s Edge and ensure the Individual Giving team consistently implements best practices for use of the database
- Guide the team’s work across Museum departments to ensure that content staff (including curators, educators, conservators, etc.) are well supported and motivated to be part of the Development effort
- Engage with the content of the Museum—including exhibitions, education, conservation, research, and scholarship—to strategically shape the case for support
- Act as an effective, confident spokesperson for the Museum’s mission, content ideas, and vision for the future, using written and visual materials
- Work with the Director of Events and Rentals and Manager of Development Events to develop a robust, exciting calendar of donor events
- Directly manage the Planned Giving program
