GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Departmental Technician will support various functions within the Director’s Office to care for and safeguard the collection on view, in storage, and in transit. This position is situated in the Director’s Office as the chief responsibility will be capital projects and gallery reinstallations across the curatorial departments. The position will work closely with the department’s managers and assistants as well as cross-departmental curatorial and collections care staff, departmental technicians, facilities and construction staff.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Safe handling and transportation of works of art and other materials within the museum
  • Caring for the collections in galleries, storage, and exhibition, including the upkeep of the art, the appearance and cleanliness of galleries, display furniture, and all storage environments
  • Installations and deinstallations related to capital projects, gallery displays and special exhibitions
  • Other duties as assigned


Requirements

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of three years experience in the care and handling of artwork in a museum, gallery, or professional art studio preferred
  • Organized process and meticulous attention to detail in the care and handling of art objects and the recording of collection information required
  • Proactive attention to maintenance of gallery and artworks required
  • Ability to adapt to multiple projects with shifting priorities, to work independently and in cooperation/coordination with all levels of MMA staff, to follow directions required
  • Ability to lift heavy objects is occasionally required

Knowledge and Education:

  • College degree preferred, museum studies, conservation, or fine art studies a plus
  • General knowledge of office computer software
